Paediatric First Aid (EYFS/OFSTED) Level 3 Course Summary

This Paediatric First Aid certificate is for those who work in a childcare setting. This paediatric first aid course has been specifically designed to meet the paediatric first aid requirements in the statutory framework for the early year's foundation stage. This qualification provides Learners with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations, illnesses, injuries and emergencies which can arise when looking after children.

Paediatric First Aid Qualification Overview:

The Paediatric First Aid course is a two-unit award, comprising:

  • Unit 1: Paediatric Emergency First Aid
  • Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

**NEW** This course is also available as a Blended course. The Blended Paediatric First Aid course allows learners to achieve the full qualification by successfully completing an online eLearning course prior to attending only 1-days face-to-face training instead of the standard 2-days. The eLearning can be done at the learners own pace and can be completed in more than 1 sitting. The eLearning is designed to take 6-hours however this time differs depending on the learners IT skills and prior knowledge of the subject. Paediatric first aid-level 3 Course Content

As per Annex A: Criteria for effective PFA training. Taken directly from the Statutory Framework for the early years' foundation stage

Unit 1: Paediatric Emergency First Aid

  • Be able to assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Help a baby or child who is having a seizure
  • Help a baby or child who is choking
  • Help a baby or child who is bleeding
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolemic shock)

Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
  • Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
  • Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
  • Help a baby or child with head, neck or back injuries
  • Help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned
  • Help a baby or child with a foreign body in eyes, ears or nose
  • Help a baby or child with an eye injury
  • Help a baby or child with a bite or sting
  • Help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold
  • Help a baby or child having: a diabetic emergency; an asthma attack; meningitis; febrile convulsions; an allergic reaction *(including safe use of Adrenaline Auto-Injectors)
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and the need for recording accidents and incidents)

* Basic training in the safe use of Adrenaline Auto-Injectors included as standard as of 1st June 2019

Paediatric first aid-level 3 Certificate

Successful candidates will be awarded the Paediatric First Aid certificate which is valid for 3 years

This course is accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB)
